The hippo of Awassa

One of the most astonishing experiences when exploring the diverse lanscape surrounding Lake Awassa is the famous humanlike hippo. It's been in the lake for thousands of years, but seldom seen as in this picture. The locals call him Birger, which means "on foot" - or "be iger". Posted by Picasa

A day at Lake Awassa

The first day walking along the green shores of Lake awassa gave some astonishing views of the abundant birdlife. A funny experience was observing the common sandpiper - it took some time before it settled and gave me an opportunity to shoot it through my telescope. Digiscoping is not an option when birds are flying or moving fast along the shore.
